of people gathered along san francisco's waterfront at midnight to ring in the new year. but it was a holiday celebration marred by violence. ktvu's alex savidge tells us a 12-year-old boy was among three people who were shot. alex? >> reporter: well, as thousands packed the waterfront last night, someone opened fire here on embarcadero close to pier 2. a total of two people shot here. one of them a 12-year-old boy. he was hit in the foot but is expected to be okay. now, this happened about 11:30 last night, as people were waiting for the fireworks show to begin in san francisco. along with the boy wounded, a man was grazed in the hip by a bullet. san francisco police say both of those shooting victims are being treated for nonlife- threatening injuries. at this point, it's unclear why the shooter began to fire or who their intended target was. just about an hour before that, there was another shooting along the waterfront. this one close to fisherman's wharf, near jefferson and mason. one person shot in the hand. police say that person's injuries request are not life- t

typical winter weather. a ktvu photographer found a lot of people on market street in san francisco had heard the forecast, ander prepared for the rain. others though, had to improvise. this was the first significant rain in almost two weeks. slick roads apparently played a role in other accidents around the bay area today. one driver had to be taken to the hospital, but the other driver walked away. the highway patrol said it responded to 33 incidents just between noon and 3:00 p.m. today. >>> as frank points out, the roadways kind of a mess. this light rain falling on the afternoon commute, or the bulk of it. you see showers still occurring out there right now. coming in close, you can see the showers mainly up in the north bay. we go into san francisco, you got light scattered showers right now. on market street. scattered showers in san mateo. east 3rd avenue. just light, nothing big. then you head towards san jose, and you've got sprinkles down there as well. you think it was a lot. the north bay did see significant rainfall to the tune of about .3, or .4 of an inch up here. that's

coverage of the near disaster on the san francisco bay that we first covered on ktvu channel 2 news at noon yesterday. this morning, the u.s. coast guard will meet with the pilot of the oil tanker that sideswiped a tower of the bay bridge. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live with new details about this bar pilot's past. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. a coast guard spokesperson tells me there will be an update on this investigation coming after the team is briefed at 8:00 this morning. we do know that investigators will be sitting down later today and talking with the pilot at the controls of this 750-foot oil tanker when it struck one of the bay bridge towers. he's identified as george close with eight years experience. he did pass an alcohol test yesterday and the results of a drug test may come back today. yesterday's accident yesterday after the vessel was heading back to sea. there was heavy fog in the area at the time. that cut visibility on the bay to just about a quarter mile. this double-hauled vessel struck the wood and barrier that sports the bridge on the western sp

the bay bridge. the san francisco oakland bay bridge. an oil tanker, more specifically according to ktvu fox 2 for the bay area it struck is support for the bay bridge just about 12:20 this afternoon. about 15 minutes ago california time. this brings back awful memories for the people of san francisco in the bay area in general from a collision that happened in 2007 when a 900-foot container ship struck that same bridge and more than 53-gallons of fuel oil poured into the bay, killed by local determinations more than 6800 birds and harmed a herring spawn that winter. closed the beaches to swimmers for weeks. this one, though, there are no signs of any oil leaking at all. the coast guard is responding. the tanker appears to be intact. whether there s anything more to this, we don't have any way to know yet until the inspectors get throughout. at first glance at least there does not appear to be an oil spill. the headline anneal tanker struck a support for the san francisco oakland bay bridge. any new information from the coast guard we will ring to you you reit away. the syrian president

. the investigation into why an empty oil tanker hit the bay bridge continues this morning in san francisco. it hit the western span of the bay bridge late yesterday morning. the impact did not damage the bridge but ripped off a part of the fender there to protect the tower. the coast guard will now interview the pilot and guy kleess this morning. he did pass an alcohol test and a drug test. those results now are pending. according to the mercury news, kleess has a spotty history. state records show back in 2009 he ran a cargo ship aground in the sacramento shipping channel and crashed a cargo ship into a catwalk near stockton in 2010. he was found at fault when a tug boat he was sailing ran aground in richmond inner harbor. right now let's get a check on the tuesday forecast. christina loren here just a lot of fog. >> someone turned the fog machine on this morning. good morning to you, jon. good morning to you at home. hard to believe but this is actually 280 in san jose now santana row. people having to slow down because of the thick fog. quarter of a mile visibility in concord. half mile in live

of paintings at the old mint in san francisco. they reflected scenes from that part of california. he took us down there and proudly showed us her work. although he traveled the world his family was always in his thoughts. california was always his home. what i will most remember about chris is how thoughtful he was and how people were drawn to him. chancellor wu wrote when chris was appointed ambassador, friends, professional acquaintances contacted me to encourage me to reach out to him. he was so well thought of. i sent a hand-written card and to my surprise he returned the correspondence with his own handwritten note. that would be very much like chris. he appreciated and enjoyed interactions with people. in fact, our friend chris highland put it very eloquently when he said, chris was the finest among us. more than his obviously charms, he was a man of substance and humility. at parties, dinners and gatherings he spent little times talking about himself and his accomplishments. only when he was forced to. instead he asked people about their lives, their views, their accomplishments. he a
